GWS Giants vs Collingwood Magpies Prediction, Round 0, March 9th 2025

Sunday AFL action continues in Round 0 of the 2025 AFL Season, and after a couple of Queensland games were cancelled due to wild weather, the GWS Giants will host the Collingwood Magpies at ENGIE Stadium.

The Giants were one of the unlucky teams knocked out by the fast-finishing Brisbane Lions in last year’s Semi-Finals. With plenty of top-end talent on their list, they’ll be aiming to take the next step and push deeper into September in 2025.

The 2023 AFL Premiers, Collingwood Magpies, had a disappointing 2024 season, finishing ninth and missing the finals. Determined to bounce back, they’ve added some experienced recruits to bolster their depth. If they can keep their stars on the park, expect a big response this year.

Form-wise, the Giants are coming off a 66-124 preseason loss to the Blues, while the Magpies flexed their muscles with a dominant 132-49 win over Richmond.

This one should be a cracking contest—who takes the win?

Here is a GWS Giants vs Collingwood Magpies Prediction for Round 0, Sunday March 9th 2025.

Prediction

More rain is expected for this Sunday showdown between the Giants and Magpies, adding another challenge for both sides, who are already missing key players. The Giants will be without two crucial figures—Tom Green, their main in-and-under midfielder, and Jesse Hogan, last season’s AFL leading goalkicker with 77 goals. Both bring strong defensive efforts, which would have been invaluable in the slippery conditions.

The Magpies will also be missing stars Jordan De Goey and Dan Houston, but they’re coming off a dominant preseason win over Richmond, while the Giants struggled in a heavy loss to Carlton. With their key outs and recent form, it’s tough to back GWS with confidence in this one.
