The 2025 AFL season is finally here, and footy fans won’t have to wait long for the action to begin. The AAMI Community Series kicks off with the Geelong Cats hosting the Essendon Bombers at GMHBA Stadium in what promises to be a thrilling preseason clash. 

This year, these preseason games carry extra weight—unlike previous years, this will be the only official hit-out for each team before the real season begins. It’s the last chance for coaches to fine-tune their best lineups and for players to stake their claim for a Round 1 spot. 

Both teams are coming in with some solid match simulation form. The Bombers took care of the Bulldogs last week with a 77-58 win, while the Cats outclassed the Hawks in a high-scoring contest, winning 106-86. 

Geelong has been one of the AFL’s most consistent powerhouses, finishing last season with 15 wins and 8 losses. However, their campaign ended in heartbreak, falling just short in the preliminary final against the eventual premiers, Brisbane, in a 95-85 loss. The Cats will be hungry to take that next step in 2025. 

Meanwhile, Essendon started last season in promising fashion but, much like their 2023 campaign, faded late. They finished with an 11-11-1 record and will be desperate to prove they can sustain their form across the full season. 

With plenty on the line for both clubs, this preseason clash should give us an exciting glimpse into what’s ahead in 2025.
